Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner transferring to play lacrosse next season.

Tyler Buchner may retire from football. ESPN's Pete Thamel said that the Alabama quarterback tried to transfer to play lacrosse on Monday. He may return to football in spring, but he will explore those possibilities.

After transferring to Alabama, Buchner started one game this season in a quarterback competition with Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson.

Ala. defeated Georgia in the SEC title game last weekend and advanced to the College Football Playoff under Milroe. Alabama defeated South Florida in September with Buchner going 5-of-14 for 34 yards

As a Notre Dame starter in 2022, he was 46-of-83 for 651 yards with three touchdowns and five interceptions.

Buchner may play lacrosse or football next autumn.

Milroe and Alabama will play top-seeded Michigan in the Rose Bowl after beating Florida State for the last playoff slot.

Buchner was a prominent high school lacrosse prospect before becoming Notre Dame's starting quarterback in 2022 and joining Alabama this season. The midfielder had committed to play lacrosse at Michigan when he was in seventh grade, according to Inside Lacrosse, but he instead landed at Notre Dame in 2021.

Last season, he started three games for the Fighting Irish before being sidelined by a shoulder injury.
